What you need to know about wisdom teeth

Where are they located?

The wisdom tooth in the upper and lower jaw is the eighth, last tooth in a row. It was given this name because it usually comes out between the ages of 17 and 25, when, according to popular belief, one has already acquired enough wisdom.

How can we know if we have a „hidden” wisdom tooth or don’t have any at all?

Wisdom teeth don’t grow for everyone, there are those who don’t have them at all, others have them in their jaws but the teeth don’t break through the gum.

There are a lot of people who don’t have their wisdom teeth hidden, and they don’t cause any problem. However, the currently complaint-free, hidden wisdom teeth can cause problems later.

What problems can a hidden wisdom tooth cause?

  • If the jaw is not large enough, there is not enough space for the protruding wisdom teeth, it can get stuck in the jaw. Such impacted teeth can compress other teeth, which is not only an aesthetic problem, but often causes pain, swollen gums, and in many cases, inflammation.
  • Unbroken wisdom teeth often need to be pulled out because they will sooner or later cause a complaint.

When is it recommended to remove the wisdom tooth/teeth?

  • The wisdom tooth is called a third pillar tooth, so you don’t have to regret taking it out. These teeth are used as rarely as possible during dentures and can only be kept in the long run if they have grown in a good position, they are well accessible and thus can be cleaned properly. In other cases, they can cause many problems, even dental foci that can lead to other health problems.
  • Wisdom teeth are typically removed when they cause complaints, such as when they become inflamed, or one side is outside and the other is inside. In this case, the tooth cannot be cleaned properly, so it can easily decay. A common reason for removal is also if requested by an orthodontist.

How do we know if we have a hidden wisdom tooth if it doesn’t cause any complaint?

To see the position of the wisdom tooth, a Panoramic X-ray must be taken.

Panoramic X-ray plays a very important role in determining the position of unhidden wisdom teeth, therefore it is recommended to take an X-ray in all cases.

Come to our office and have your wisdom teeth checked! Based on the Panoramic X-Ray made on-site, our specialist dentist will recommend the appropriate treatment. Call us on: mobile: +36 70 372 3000, or send us an email to us: info@adordental.hu

When is CT, 3D imaging is needed to determin the position of a wisdom tooth?

In several cases, a Panoramic X-ray, 2D image, is not enough as the roots of wisdom teeth may be very close to the nerve. In such cases a CT scan, 3D image (https://nadordental.hu/services/ct-imaging) must be taken, as it gives the oral surgeon a clear picture of how close the nerve is to the root and how it can safely be removed without injuring the nerve.

Nádor Dental has a modern CT machine. Request an appointment for a health check! If necessary, we can take a CT scan on site. Call us on +36 70 372 3000 or write to us: info@adordental.hu

What do we need to remember about wisdom teeth?

  • Have your teeth checked regularly During the controlls, the wisdom teeth are also reviewed
  • If medically recommended or causing a complaint, pull out the wisdom tooth that is causing the problem
  • Do not delay the required tooth extraction! Regeneration occurs faster at a young age and the tooth is also easier to get extracted
  • If the wisdom teeth are healthy and well placed, having them regularly examined, there is no need to extract them
