Dental control with oral cancer screening
Why is oral cancer screening important?
Early detection of oral cancer can save lives. As with other cancers, abnormalities can develop inside the mouth, which may require immediate intervention. It often goes unnoticed, which is why we recommend having regular check-ups — at least once a year.
How is an oral cancer screening performed?
During the examination, the dentist looks at the lips and inside the mouth; the tongue — its surface, sides and underneath, inside the cheeks, the upper and lower lips, the palate, and the gums.
The doctor looks for red or white spots, or a sore that bleeds easily and does not heal.
In case you have any difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your tongue is painful or difficult, see your doctor.
Is Cancer Screening Painful?
The screening is completely painless. During the examination the doctor gently touches the organs in the mouth in gloved hands.
What happens if a specialist detects a change during cancer screening?
If your doctor notices any suspicious-looking areas, you will either be:
- offered a follow-up visit in the near future to see if any further changes have occurred compared to the previous examination, or
- referred to a doctor who specializes in oral cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Oral cancer can only be diagnosed with a biopsy, when a sample of tissue in the area is removed and examined.
What Factors Can Increase Oral Cancer?
- Heavy smoking
- Consumption of alcohol in large quantities and regularly
- Extreme sun exposure – when people expose themselves to strong sunlight without protection often and for a long time
How can we reduce the risk and prevent cancer?
- by eating healthy food – especially raw fruits and vegetables
- by doing regular exercise, active recreation
- by quitting smoking
- by minimizing alcohol consumption
