Oral hygiene Treatment with EMS Technology

21/03/2023 | Dr. József Németh
Tartar and plaque removal is one of the most important dental treatments for preserving healthy teeth. Teeth with tartar are not only aesthetically bothersome, but can also lead to tooth decay and serious periodontal disease.

Professional, painless tartar removal with ultrasound and EMS technology at Nádor Dental

What is tartar?

Tartar can be found in practically every adult and even child mouth. During eating, a thin, colourless, barely visible plaque layer forms on the surface of the teeth, dentures and prostheses.

It consists largely of dissolved food residue, and is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, the plaquebecomes harder and harder as a result of the minerals present in the saliva (calcium, phosphate) and then becomes calcified. This resulting calcareous plaque is called tartar.

Teeth with tartar are not only aesthetically unpleasant but can also cause tooth decay and serious periodontal diseases. If tartar is not removed in time, it can lead to receding gums, atrophy, and. eventually, tooth loss.

At Nádor Dental, tartar removal is performed by either a dentist or a qualified oral hygienist using an ultrasound tartar removal device.

The most modern technology available today, EMS, is also available in our clinic.

The advantages of EMS compared to traditional tartar removal:

  • Thanks to its ‘no-pain’ technology, it is painless, much gentler and faster than the traditional method
  • Gently but effectively removes plaque, discoloration and tartar
  • No air-flow is required to remove discoloration: the powder used for this is gentle on the gum tissue
  • Even hidden caries can be recognized earlier
  • Minimizes discomfort for patients with gingival recession/gingival wear
  • Makes periodontal therapy more effective, by cleaning areas under the gums faster and more gently
  • Can clean implants with high efficiency without damaging their surface, both above and below the gums around the implant
  • Makes the treatment of gingivitis around implants more comfortable and effective
  • Cleans orthodontic appliances more efficiently and faster
  • Cleans dentures and other restorations (fillings, inlays) is extremely important, and can also be used in these cases

If necessary, we use anaesthetic gel or dental anaesthetic, so the tartar removal is completely painless.

Unfortunately the number of people with periodontal disease is very high – 80% of the adult population in Hungary (!) and more than 50% worldwide – due to poor oral hygiene and inadequate oral care habits. Proper teeth care and personal hygiene can prevent gum disease-periodontitis.

The process of tartar removal in our clinic:

Tartar removal is considered a routine procedure in today’s dentistry.

  1. An appointment has to be made prior to tartar removal in our surgery.

  1. Tartar removal is performed by a dental hygienist or a dentist.

  1. The treatment is usually painless, though you may feel a little tingling during the procedure.

  1. In rare cases when the gums around the tartar are inflamed or cervical wear is present, tartar removal can be painful. In these cases, we use anaesthetic gel or dental anaesthetic for pain-free treatment.

After tartar removal, the surface of the teeth are polished so that it is more difficult for tartar to form on the resulting smooth surface.

If we want to achieve an even more perfect result, air-flow follows the polishing. During air-flow, the teeth become even whiter and regain their original cleanliness and beauty.

How long does an average tartar removal take?

Depending on the amount of tartar, a thorough, professional oral hygiene treatment takes about 30-60 minutes.

Is it possible to remove tartar at home?

Many people believe that with the ‘amateur’ tartar removal tools that present on the market today, tartar can be removed at home without the help of a professional.

The build-up of tartar is influenced by proper dental care, but it is also influenced by our genetic make-up, among other things. In some cases, even if we take care of our teeth regularly and correctly, the amount of tartar increases so much every few months that a visit to the dental hygienist becomes unavoidable.

The disadvantage of „oral hygiene treatment” at home is that we can only remove plaque, not tartar. In the dental office, we remove tartar sticking to the surface of the tooth with the help of ultrasound, reaching under the gums if necessary.

What are correct techniques in dental care?

Best practice techniques in dental care are constantly developing, and with the appearance of new devices, new opportunities open up. It is therefore worth contacting an expert who will determine what the most suitable tools would be for our teeth and how we can use them in such a way that the time we spend on dental care is as effective as possible.

At the Nádor Dental clinic, our periodontist and dental hygienist colleagues will help you learn correct dental care techniques.

What happens if dental care is irregular or incorrect?

Irregular or inadequate dental care results in the accumulation of plaque on the teeth and the formation of tartar, which not only causes bad breath, but can also lead to inflammation of the gums.

Inflamed gums will not heal without treatment. The gums may become swollen, and small pockets may form, which become filled with bacteria. The size of the pockets, if left untreated, increases over time, until the inflammation reaches the jawbone. Then the teeth can become loose and fall out after a while.

Inflamed gums often do not cause pain, but they can form dental foci and cause other diseases. Inflammation of the pericardium and premature birth are proven consequences of periodontal disease.

What toothbrush and toothpaste should we use?

With a good toothbrush, and good brushing techniques together with flossing all tooth surfaces can be thoroughly cleaned. It is important that the bristle strength of the toothbrush not to be too high, the head should be small, and the handle flexible. It is best if the bristles are of medium density. With the right toothbrush, you can avoid cervical wear and gum damage, but for this you also need to ask your dentist for advice on the correct brushing technique.

All toothpastes on the market today contain the right amount of fluoride. Small children, however, should use toothpaste suitable for their age group, whose fluoride concentration is not too high. The emphasis is on the correct brushing technique, which your dentist can advise on. Strong brushing can lead to damaging the tooth neck, which can cause many discomforts.

The cornerstones of precise brushing:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for a minimum of 2-3 minutes

  1. We recommend visit a dentist every half-year, or sooner in case of complaints

  1. After meals, if brushing is not possible, chew sugar-free chewing gum

  1. We advise using dental floss, oral irrigators, and interdental cleaning brushes – however if you have periodontal disease or suspect periodontal disease, you should avoid using oral irrigators!

Regular and thorough teeth cleaning, the use of dental floss, and of the right sized toothbrush and toothpaste, as well as a dental check-up and professional tartar removal at least twice a year, can prevent the development of periodontal disease!

Can pain occur after tartar removal?

Tartar removal is almost completely painless, but after the treatment the teeth may be more sensitive; some dull pain and sensitivity is normal.

If strong, long-lasting gum bleeding occurs, or if the pain is present on the next or third day, be sure to check it with your dentist!

What results can we expect after tartar removal?

After the removal of tartar, we not only get rid of yellow, discoloured teeth and bad breath, but our teeth become visibly whiter. If teeth whitening is done after tartar removal, the final result will be perfect.

The basic condition for teeth whitening in our surgery is always  preliminary tartar removal. Although tartar removal is not considered a whitening procedure, polishing and air-flow remove brown, discoloured spots and help you achieve a beautiful, bright smile again.

In order to preserve the whiteness of your teeth, it is important to take care of and clean your teeth regularly and thoroughly.

It’s worth buying a soft or medium strong toothbrush and brushing your teeth gently, not harshly, using the correct brushing technique. This way we can avoid the risk of gingivitis.

We also recommend using an interdental toothbrush and dental floss. Regular use of these can significantly reduce the risk of periodontal disease.

Ask our periodontist or dental hygienist for advice on the phone number +3670 372 3000 or write to the e-mail address info@nadordental.hu

It’s worth using dental floss or an interdental toothbrush at least once a day, and the use of mouthwash is also recommended.

However in case you have periodontal disease or suspect it, you should avoid using oral irrigation!

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, periodontal disease can be avoided.

Don't wait until it's too late! The health of your teeth is also essential in maintaining general health!
